The Clinical Microbiology division at the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, American University of Beirut and the Laboratory of Pathogens, Department of Microbiology University of Saint Joseph, Beirut, conducted a clinical microbiology training and proficiency testing activities for 185 governmental and private laboratories across Lebanon since 2015. This training resulted in an article entitled a “Nationwide proficiency assessment of bacterial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing among 110 laboratories in Lebanon”.
These activities were supported by the Ministry of Public Health and the WHO Country Office-Lebanon and targeted education about the appropriate diagnosis of bacterial pathogens and the accurate determination of the best and most relevant antibiotic to test against, in order to provide reliable data to physicians caring for patients suffering from infections. The findings revealed the crucial need for the MOPH to institutionalize a PT system as an integral part for certification and accreditation of Clinical Laboratories.
