Naef K. Basile Cancer Institute ( NKBCI)Our Vision
To be a leading institute for cancer prevention and treatment through promoting excellence in patient care, research, and education and enhancing effectiveness and collaboration among cancer programs and healthcare providers.
Our Mission
The mission of The Naef K. Basile Cancer Institute (NKBCI) at the American University of Beirut Faculty of Medicine (AUBMC FM) is to reduce the burden of cancer in Lebanon and the region through the application of state-of-the-art medical knowledge and technology and the development of integrated and advanced programs in patient care, research, education and prevention.
The Institute
The Naef K. Basile Cancer Institute (NKBCI) at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) is a state-of-the-art adult cancer facility that provides comprehensive cancer treatment and research.
The Institute was made possible through a generous contribution by the Naef K. Basile Foundation, which was established in 1995, following the death of Dr. Naef Basile, a Lebanese-American obstetrician-gynecologist whose lifelong wish was to give back to his country of birth, through the establishment of the Naef K. Basile Cancer Institute. He wanted to establish an institute that would compare with the best cancer centers in the world.
The NKBCI includes a multidisciplinary specialized group to diagnose and treat cancer and establish programs on health education for cancer prevention and early diagnosis. Through its partnership with the Naef Basile Foundation, AUBMC will ultimately be able to enlarge its services to reach out to more patients in Lebanon and the region.
The Institute is supported by many AUBMC departments and programs that are providing superlative care for cancer patients, including:
- The Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) Program that utilizes front-line diagnostic equipment to identify each patient’s unique needs and provides the highest quality of care by a team of nurses specially trained in BMT services.

The department is actively involved in multi-disciplinary cancer management and initiated high-dose rate brachytherapy, Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT), Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT), Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), and Fractionated Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SRT), providing patients with the potential for improved results with reduced side effects. Our Services
NKBCI facilities have been originally set up to contain a spacious patient and family area that allows a friendly environment. Our commitment to patients goes beyond the delivery of sophisticated care; we respect the individual needs of all those who seek our care and work to empower patients with the knowledge and support they need to successfully fight cancer.
The Naef K. Basile Cancer Institute (NKBCI) consists of 4 major service units:
A. Ambulatory Treatment Unit (Outpatient)
B. Inpatient Unit
C. Stem Cell Transplant Unit
D. Radiotherapy Unit
Social Work Services and Needy Patient Fund
Social work activities at NKBCI started with individual efforts from cancer survivors.
Ladies who survived breast cancer initiated a support group to help other diagnosed women overcome all the negative vibrations. Their aim was to inspire hope to those affected by breast cancer through early detection, education, and support services.
NKBCI established centralized social work services dedicated to:
- Providing the necessary support and assistance to the patient in the medical and psychiatric setting in the spirit of the Service of Excellence.
- Helping families adjust to social, psychological, and economic problems resulting from patients’ illness especially during crisis.
