On May 15th, 2015, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and DCEIP celebrated its first “Kangaroo Mother Care” awareness day. Parents held their infants skin-to-skin on their chest for as long as they wished. Parents manifested high satisfaction from being able to put infants on their chest; most importantly infants showed signs of more stable condition and they were able to initiate breastfeeding earlier than expected. They also slept for a longer period of time.
This event would not have happened without the support of the unit leadership, the dedication of the medical and nursing staff and the involvement of others from the health care team like the psychomotor therapist and psychologist.
